Star of David Jewelry – Pendants, Necklace and Rings
I received my first Star of David Jewelry 5 years ago from a friend of mine in UK who visited India. During her stay in Mumbai she stayed at my place and gifted me a pendent as parting gift. She came to India 3 more times after that and also stayed with me and always gifted me jewelry before going, but the Star of David Pendant holds more sentimental value than anyother piece of jewelry she gifted as that was the first gift she gave me. Over the years we have become so closer that even her friends come to meet me when they visit India.
When I first saw the pendent I did not know the meaning or religious significance of the Star of David symbol. I just thought of it as a pendant with a star design. But my friend explained things to me in detail that I even got my jeweler to make a bracelet with the symbol hanging on it to match my pendant. I have also seen rings using this symbol, but I think pendants look great.
Star of David Symbolism and Meaning
So what is special about Star of David Jewelry? What does the Star of David symbol stand for? Is this symbol associated to any particular religion? Does this symbol carry a Symbolism or Meaning? What is the purpose or reasons why people wear the Star of David Jewelry? I would try to answer these questions through this Hub.
Star of David was first used as a Jewish symbol in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1354 as the Symbol for the Flag when Jews were given the right to have a flag, by Emperor Charles IV. The people chose the double triangle star, as their symbol. When the Emperor was welcomed to the city in 1500s, they displayed the star on their banners.
The Star of David is a six-pointed star made up of two triangles superimposed over each other. This symbol is often referred in Judaism as Magen David which means the Shield of David in Hebrew. It is also known as the Jewish Star. It may be noticed that Jews wore a yellow Star of David as a method of identification during the World War II. Even today, Star of David Pendants are used as a popular way of expressing identification with Judaism. In the State of Israel a red Star of David is the symbol of official emergency medical ambulance service. The blue Star of David symbol is the part of the flag design of Israel and is a symbol of unity. Many associate this symbol with Judaism as many Jews wear jewelry with the Star of David as part of the design and the flag of Israel have a blue Star of David in the center. However, this symbol is not exclusively been used by the Jews. It has also been noticed that it was used by Christians and Muslims at various points in history.
There is some confusion as to what is the symbolic meaning of this symbol. There are many symbolic meanings attached to the Star of David. Some Kabbalists thought that the six points of the star represented God's absolute rule over the universe in all six directions: north, south, east, west, up and down and the two triangles are also known to symbolize the dual nature of good and evil in human nature. The triangle within the star that points upwards is a symbol of good deeds that reach the heaven and attract goodness to the world. According to them wearing a Star of David symbol or carrying it can ensure protection against evil spirits. Jewish People associate this Symbol with King David who fought the enemy King Nimrod when he was a teen. David's shield was composed of two interlocking triangles attached to the back of a round shield and at one point the battle became so intense that that the two triangles were fused together. David won the battle and the two triangles were henceforth known as the Shield of David. To the Jews the overlapping triangles in the symbol was considered representation of the relationship between God and the Jewish people. According to them, the star that points up symbolizes God and the star that points down represents the Jews. Yet, some others thought of the twelve sides on the triangle as representing the Twelve Tribes.
There are many religious symbols worn as Jewelry. The Star of David has been used by Jews as a symbol of unity and hope and as identification for the followers of Judaism just like how a cross symbolizes Christianity and the crescent moon represents the religion of Islam. Whatever, the reasons one may prefer to buy or wear a Star of David Jewelry like a Pendant or a ring, I should admit that it is a cool looking symbol to wear as Jewelry.
